From Sally: More information on the sliding scale registration experiment: after talking to Oakwood at length, we are trying a sliding scale this spring to accommodate folks with more limited incomes, while helping Oakwood and me run this event in the black. The scale is a suggestion; there are no financial police and no judgment. Bottom line: if you value Oakwood and this weekend, please help support it as much as you can. Oakwood’s food costs have gone up about $18 per person per weekend to ensure organic, high-quality meals. Bottom line: the current Oakwood room and board fee is $192 for a shared room for the weekend. Whatever is on top of that is the facilitation fee, which pays for close to 15 hours of instruction by multiple facilitators, handouts, all-day coffee and tea, the bonfire and pool, access to instruments, some snacks, and other assorted goodies and stuff. All discounts come out of the facilitation fee. I’ve kept the average facilitation fee at $50 or less for years and have decreased the facilitation fee to cover some of Oakwood’s rising costs to keep things as affordable as possible, but things have reached a point where I can’t continue to do that and run in the black. The lowest tier of the sliding scale is last fall’s rates, without the food increase. The middle and top tier are last fall’s rates with the food increase factored in. Hopefully those paying at the lower rate will be offset by those paying the top rate and Oakwood and I can run in the black. Please consider: if you pay at the lowest tier early bird rate of $220, your facilitation fee is $28; middle tier, $48; upper tier, $68. So Oakwood and I are asking you to think about the Buddhist concept of dana—giving as a spiritual practice, and paying what something is truly worth to you. Sorry if this is too much information, but we offer it in the spirit of transparency as Oakwood enters into a time of transition. Yell if you have questions or comments.

Fees are as below:

Early bird $220/$240/$260 (by April 5)
regular $225/$245/$265 (by May 29)
late $235/$255/$275 (after May 29).

Subtract $50 for camping; add $20 for a private room.

Income guidelines: lowest tier, household income below $40,000; middle tier $40,000-$75,000; upper $75,000+.

NOTE: Prices have been updated for 2016. See the registration page for updated pricing…

Greetings, ladies!

If all the current registrations hold, we’re full for fall! Sally has started a waiting list, in case anyone has to cancel and a slot opens up, so if people want to attend, they should contact sally@womendrum.org to get on the waiting list in case we find we can take a few more or we have cancellations.

It’s going to be a great weekend!

Greetings, drummers!

As I sit here staring out at a yard that’s covered in snow, it’s almost hard to imagine that it’s time to start planning for Spring Fling already, but it is! I’ve just updated the site for all the spring info, and I’ll be updating the Facebook page soon and starting a new “event” over there.

119 days. Is it here yet? I’m ready to drum!!!

Thanks to the user who noticed that the site was acting oddly… word got passed back to us, I investigated, and it turned out our WordPress had been hacked with a php injection hack a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully, it was an easy fix, so it’s been fixed and WP has been upgraded to the newest version, so we shouldn’t be vulnerable to similar attacks in the future.

Stupid hackers. They should obviously spend more time drumming and less time being obnoxious little creeps…

The Fall 2009 Women’s Drumming Weekend is full, and now closed to registrations.

If you didn’t get a chance to register, now would be the time to put Spring Fling (April 30 – May 2, 2010) on your calendar, since extra-early early-bird registration is now open at $205 for the weekend (price good through Jan. 1).

For those who are coming to WDW in October, we have a bonus Wendy! She’s back visiting from the wilds of New Hampshire and will be with us for the weekend. I’ll be very happy to not have to break in a new partner in crime. Expect silliness. 🙂

(Oh… if the weather looks remotely like it might be warm enough, bring a swimsuit or clothes you don’t mind going in the water in… we may do a water percussion breakout if the weather gods are kind!)

Wow, things are changing around here! (And yes, I hear the chorus of you going “Well, it’s about time!!”)

The entire site is being rebuilt. There will be a blog (right here, even!), and all the main pages will actually be built in WordPress too, so that Sally can edit them without having to wait for me. 🙂

For right now, there’s this post, and the main page about the fall event, and that’s kinda it. I’ll get the rest of the pages (facilitators, workshops, registration, etc.) loaded over the next few days, but this gives us enough to be proof-of-concept so that Sally can see if she likes it.
